Zenas Kwaku Awuku is a Data Engineer at Ishango.ai, where he works on building and maintaining data systems that power real-world AI applications. His work focuses on designing data pipelines, ensuring reliable data flow, and supporting the deployment and operation of production-grade machine learning systems.
He holds a BSc in Computer Engineering from the University of Ghana and has a strong background in software development, data operations, and technology education.
Zenas is also the Founder of ITL Makers Hub, an initiative focused on equipping young people with practical skills in Robotics, IoT, Embedded Systems, and Computer Science. Through this work, he actively mentors students and educators, helping bridge the gap between theoretical learning and hands-on application.
As an international speaker, he has shared insights at various conferences and events, often focusing on building real-world systems and expanding access to practical tech education across Africa.
Beyond his work in data engineering, he is an Arm Developer and a Quantum Computing enthusiast. Through his combined industry and educational efforts, Zenas continues to support and guide the next generation of African tech talent.
Abstract
This workshop introduces participants to the intersection of Python programming, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) using affordable microcontrollers and simulation tools. Designed for beginners and educators, it demystifies core concepts such as MicroPython, hardware interfacing, and embedded systems through hands-on, project-based learning. Participants will explore how Python can be used beyond software—controlling sensors, motors, and real-world devices. Using tools like Wokwi, attendees will simulate and build simple systems such as smart lighting or traffic control setups, without requiring prior hardware experience. The session also highlights how these tools and methods can be adapted for teaching and scaling robotics education in schools and communities, particularly in low-resource environments. This workshop has previously been delivered at PyCon Ghana and PyHo, where it received strong engagement from participants and demonstrated the effectiveness of simulation-first, low-cost robotics education. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a clear understanding of how to get started with robotics using Python and how to apply these skills in practical, locally relevant contexts.
